Meet the Team

HBCUvc is a Black women-led organization with five full-time staff, all of which are HBCU graduates and identify as Black and/or Latina. Fifty percent of HBCUvc’s staff are hired from within the community of HBCUvc and are alumni of HBCUvc’s programs. The HBCUvc team feels fortunate to serve the same communities that “raised us.” These communities exist through race, school affiliations, and geographic hometowns, shaping our experiences and cultural identities. And collectively, it serves as the “why” for each HBCUvc team member.

  • Chelsea Burwell is the communications manager for HBCUvc, where she helps shape the organization’s internal and external messaging and voice through strategy building, content creation, and storytelling.

She has an array of experience in communications, including editorial writing, website design and management, and digital media. Her passions for community building and storytelling are informed by her own experiences and interests as an HBCU alumna, millennial mommy, and active community member. Prior to joining HBCUvc, Chelsea served as a writer and editor at Georgetown University and a news writer for Blavity.

A native of Chesterfield, VA — by way of Richmond — Chelsea received her bachelor’s degree in mass communications and English as a Chancellor’s Scholar with summa cum laude distinction from Winston Salem State University. She is also a graduate of Georgetown University, where she received a Master of Arts degree in Communication Culture and Technology. Outside of work, she can be found trying a new food spot, planning her Summer 2023 wedding and travel adventures with her fiancé, De’Andre, and keeping up with her two active and curious sons, DJ and Dontae.

  • Cynthia Lopez Dixon is the Chief Administrative Officer at HBCUvc and has been with the organization since its inception in 2017. Her work focuses on delivering innovative and broad-spectrum approaches to addressing operational support, administrative challenges, and organizational development with rapid results.

Cynthia is also the Founder and CEO of CYNASSISTS™, a minority-owned professional virtual administrative firm that provides support to C-Suite executives, entrepreneurs, and administrative professionals. Along her 20+ year corporate career as an executive assistant, she has contributed to the success and development of over a dozen clients and significantly bolstered and accelerated the productivity and efficiency of administrative staff within large corporations, government agencies, staffing agencies, entrepreneurial start-ups, and affiliate organizations.

Born and raised in New York, Cynthia brings a vivacious and positive attitude to everything she pursues. Cynthia is an alumna of Langston University—the only historically Black college or university in the state of Oklahoma—where she received her B.S. in biology and chemistry. Outside of work, she leads several volunteer service efforts through her organization across the D.C. Metro Area, along with opportunities to mentor and connect with young professionals through career development. Cynthia is a proud wife and mother to three boys and enjoys traveling, spending time with loved ones, and listening to 80s and 90s hip-hop and R&B.
